Real Madrid full back Dani Carvajal is set for a long spell on the sidelines after he was diagnosed with a viral infection of the heart.

The right-back is now ruled out of Sunday's La Liga game with Espanyol as well as Spain's upcoming World Cup qualifying games with Albania and Israel as his heart condition is monitored.

A statement on Real Madrid's website reads: Following tests carried out on Dani Carvajal, he has been diagnosed with a viral pericardium infection. His recovery will continue to be assessed."

Marca's Juancar Baena reports that the 25-year-old will miss at least six weeks while dealing with the condition.

Carvajal is the third full back Real Madrid have out injured with left backs With Marcelo (hamstring) and Theo Hernandez (dislocated shoulder) also struggling with their health.

Zinedine Zidane is expected to put his trust in 18-year-old right-back Achraf Hakimi who while has bags of potential, is very inexperienced.

Carvajal, who recently signed a contract extension at Real until June 2022, has played 167 times for the Spanish club, winning the Champions League three times along with La Liga and Copa del Rey titles.
