3 operatives killed as gunmen open fire on NDLEA officials in Kogi state

- The attackers reportedly collected the rifles of the dead operatives and fled after the shooting

Unknown gunmen have shot dead three operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Okene, Kogi state.

The attack on the officials reportedly occurred on Friday, October 13, at about 8.30 pm, while the operatives were on patrol, according to the commandant of the NDLEA in Kogi, Idris Bello.

Bello told reporters on Sunday, October 15, that the operatives were taken unaware when the gunmen emerged from nowhere and opened fire on the officials close to the main gate of the Federal College of Education, Okene, NTA reported.

The commandant gave the names of the operatives killed as Nicholas Onwumere, Ebun Peters, and Abdulrahman Musa.

He however, said three other NDLEA officers who were on duty alongside their three colleagues when the gunmen struck survived the attack.

He said the gunmen collected the rifles of the dead officers and vanished after the attack.

Bello said efforts were being made to track down the killers as other security agencies in the state had been contacted on the development.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian army has officially ended its military operation in the southeast code named Operation Python Dance II.

This was made known by the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 82 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Adamu Baba Abubakar. Abubakar who made the announcement on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General TY Buratai, formally declared the end of the operation on Saturday, October 14, in Sector 1 Tactical Headquarters at Umuahia, Abia state.

The traditional activation of camp fire to formally signify the successful completion of the exercise was lit, a statement by Colonel Sagir Musa, deputy director public relations 82 Division, on Sunday, October 15, said.
