Conte said: “The performance of the whole team was bad, not one or two players — all the players.

“Our performance was bad. This season will be difficult but we must also understand we have to try to build something important for the future.

“Everyone can see our situation. If we compare last season, we didn’t play in the Europa League or Champions League.”

Conte suggested the absence of the injured Alvaro Morata and the withdrawal of Victor Moses contributed to the loss.

“This season we’re facing four competitions and we are having a few problems doing this", he said.

“When you have a few injuries, you’re in trouble. We need to give the opportunity to the new players to have more experience in this league, to give the opportunity to young players to show they deserve to stay and play for Chelsea.

“We must have patience and to understand it won’t be easy.”

Conte is currently preparing his side for Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Italian giants AS Roma.
