The royal ruler of Tiv land known as the Tor of Tiv has gven out his precious daughter's hand in marriage. The wedding ceremony which was a simple event held in the Tiv land was the talk of the town because of the money received as bride price payment.

Tor Tiv, the 5th His Royal Majesty, Prof. James Ayatse gave out his daughter who is a medical doctor, Dr Doofan Ayatse to her lover, Dr David Tsenu Agishi of Etulo, Buruku local government and received N1000 as bride price.

The bride price payment was an attempt of Tor Tiv to cut down on the high bride price amounts which was said to have chased many suitors away. The matter was appealed by the First Lady of Benue state, Mrs. Eunice Ortom.

In her request, she pleaded that the bride price payment be reduced as it had previously chased many suitors away from marrying girls from that area in Benue state.

The Tor Tiv who heeded to plea made an example of his daughter and gave her away for N1000. He added that the N1000 dowry will soon become the norm and many people will adhere to the new rule in Tiv land to ensure everyone can easily marry their heart's desire with no financial burden.

Bride price is a mandated payment made to the bride's family in Nigeria. Almost every culture practices dowry payment. In fact, many marriages have been cancelled due to the groom not being able to pay the bride price.

NAIJ.com earlier reported how a groom was shocked from the bride price list given to him in Imo state which was an outrageous sum ranging from N1Million.
