9 Facts you need to know about Governor Willy Obiano of Anambra state

Governor Willie Obiano has won the Anambra gubernatorial election having scored 234,071 from 21 local government areas of the state.

Obiano’s victory comes despite opposition by his former godfather, ex-governor Peter Obi, who had accused the incumbent of failing to deliver on good governance.

But against all odds, the Obiano beat four other candidates and emerged victorious in the poll.

Following he’s victory, NAIJ.com has compiled 7 notable facts about the Anambra governor.

1. Willie Obiano attended primary school at Holy Trinity School in Onitsha and got his WASC at the Christ the King College (CKC) Onitsha.

2. He has a bachelor's degree in accountancy from the University of Lagos and a master of business administration from the same university.

3. He holds a national merit certificate for outstanding service during his NYSC (National Youth Service Corps) in Benue State, Nigeria in the 1979/80 Service Year.

4. Obiano began his banking career in 1981 at the First Bank of Nigeria

5. He worked for Chevron Oil Nigeria Plc as accountant and rose to the position of Chief Internal Auditor iIn 1989.

7. Obiano joined Fidelity Bank as Deputy Manager and head of Audit unit and rose to the position of Executive Director on October 2003.

8. His political career began in 2013 when he contested the Anambra state gubernatorial elections on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and won.

9. His political godfather, Peter Obi, who assisted him in winning the 2013 election, became his opposer in 2017.

Meanwhile, Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) has described the Anambra election held on Saturday, November 18 as “one of the worst” governorship elections conducted in the country since the return of democracy in 1999.

NAIJ.com gathered that the PLAC executive director, Clement Nwankwo, said this during a chat with journalists in Awka, the state capital.

He said contrary to how elections should be conducted, the poll was marred by various forms of vote-buying antics.
