NAIJ.com gathers that the traditional ruler of Oko in Orumba North Local Government Area of the state who also happens to be Dr Ekwueme’s younger brother, Igwe (Prof) Laz Ekwueme, was allegedly unable to confirm if his brother was still alive.
In an interview, he reportedly stated: “I am not in a position to tell you anything.”
When pressed further, the monarch allegedly pointedly refused to speak to any publication about the health condition of his elder brother who is currently hospitalized at a medical facility in Enugu state.
Mrs Chidi Onyemelukwe, Dr Ekwueme’s daughter and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deputy governorship candidate for the upcoming Anambra gubernatorial election however stated that her father was still alive.
She however stated that her father was in critical condition, and that she had informed the PDP governorship candidate, Mr Oseloka Obaze, of the new development.
When contacted, Chief Ben Ezeibe, a very close friend to the former vice president, disclosed that they were still waiting for the Air Ambulance promised by President Muhammadu Buhari, to convey Dr Ekwueme abroad for treatment.
He stated: “I have been in touch with Ekwueme’s younger brother, Professor Obum Ekwueme, who is a surgeon; and he did not confirm anything.
“He is the one handling his brother’s case in Enugu and he is the only person that is in a position to know the former vice president’s condition.
“We are still waiting for the Air Ambulance to fly him out. For now, the information about his death is all rumour, which cannot be substantiated.”
Amid all this confusion and uncertainty, residents of Oko, the community Dr Ekwueme hails from, are making efforts to ascertain the true situation of their illustrious son.
One indigene reportedly stated: “We have been making calls to his home in Enugu and the hospital where he is being treated and the information we have is that he is getting better.”
