Ekwueme’s medical treatment abroad: That means if you don't have money to go overseas you should go and die - Nigerians react

- Nigerians have reacted to Friday’s announcement that President Buhari approved a foreign medical treatment for Alex Ekwueme

- Some are wondering why the media razzmatazz about an air ambulance for the former vice president

- Other are asking why the president is approving what Ekwueme is already entitled to and announcing it

Report surfaced last night that President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered that ailing former vice president, Alex Ekwueme, be flown abroad for medical treatment with immediate effect.

NAIJ.com had reported that Ekwueme, 85, collapsed at his residence in Enugu and was rushed to the hospital

According to the senior special assistant on media and publicity to the president, Garba Shehu, the approval given by Buhari would cover the cost of chartering an air ambulance for the journey and the cost of his treatment.

Section 5, Subsections 1 and 2, of Remuneration of Former Presidents and Heads of State Act 1999 allows for free medical treatment for former vice-presidents and their immediate family members

The announcement has generated mixed reactions from Nigerians. While some are of the opinion that the press release by FG is unnecessary and screams of "notice me", others are saying Nigeria's health sector needs to be fixed.

Below are some of the reactions:

Ekwueme was reported to have collapsed at his residence in Independence Layout, Enugu, on Saturday, October 28. He was reportedly rushed to Memfys Hospital for Neurosurgery in the state.

His family later disclosed that the elder statesman was now in stable condition, but still being monitored in the hospital, pending when his condition improves.
