Former vice president Alex Ekwueme finally flown abroad for medical treatment

- A former vice president of the second republic has been flown abroad

- Alex Ekwueme was flown out of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu on Sunday, November 12, for a medical treatment abroad

- He was earlier hospitalised at the Memfys Hospital of Neurosurgery, Enugu, for chest inflection

The second republic vice president, Alex Ekwueme, was on Sunday, November 12, airlifted abroad for further medical treatment.

Ekwueme was hospitalised at Memfys Hospital of Neurosurgery, Enugu, for chest inflection on October 29.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the elder statesman departed the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, around 8:30 am on Sunday in a white air ambulance with registration number N605AJ.

However, Memfys Hospital ‎and family sources did not disclose the country where the former vice president would be receiving treatment.

NAN reports that some family members accompanied Ekwueme on the medical trip, while others came to bid him farewell.

President Muhammadu Buhari had last week approved that Ekwueme should be flown abroad for treatment.

NAIJ.com earlier reported that there was confusion in the past week over the health condition of the former vice president.

The confusion over the true status of Ekwueme's health followed rumors of his death.

However, while his younger brother, Igwe (Professor) Laz Ekwueme, could not confirm whether his brother was still alive, the former vice president’s daughter however stated that her father had not died, but was in critical condition as at that time.
