Manchester United hierarchy have told Jose Mourinho he will have to offload some players if he wants to bring in players in January.

The United boss is desperate to add quality to his squad but the board are reluctant until some players have been sold.

Mourinho has never been a manager who shys away from spending the cash if its available, he has spent £285 million on six major signings since he joined the Old Trafford outfit.

There are some players in the United ranks that their future don't look bright at the club. 22-year-old Luke Shaw who cost the Red Devils a fortune from Southampton four years ago is yet to start a game this season haven been blighted by injury.

Fellaini's contract too is almost out and a renewal is yet to be agreed, the Belgian midfielder's future still remains unclear at Old Trafford.

Sixteen first-team squad members have left since Mourinho took charge in May 2016, but only the £16m sale of Memphis Depay and the £22 million departure of Morgan Schneiderlin generated significant income, while high-earners Wayne Rooney and Bastian Schweinsteiger have also left.

United's most recent financial results, released in September, showed their wage bill had risen by 13.5% to £263.5 million.

Chelsea's victory over Mourinho's men on Sunday November 5 left a bitter taste in Mourinho mouth. The defeat makes it the third successive defeats at the Bridge in the hands of his former employers.
