In Nigeria, national ID card is compulsory for every citizen. However, not everybody knows how to get one. Therefore, today, we will tell you all you need to know about NIMC pre enrolment process and how you can make the whole national id card registration ordeal much faster, simpler and more pleasant. Check it out!
What is NIMC registration all about?
The whole point of national identity card registration via the National Identity Management Commission (or NIMC for short) is to obtain your own ID card with the National Identification Number (or NIN) on it. One of the easiest and most convenient ways of registering is through the pre-enrolment.
All you have to do is to go to the pre-enrolment website (penrol.nimc.gov.ng), fill in the forms, receive a barcode, and you are almost done.
If you want to complete pre-enrolment offline, you can do that too. For that, just click here. Download the form from the page, print it out, fill it in by hand (use only block letters) and take it to your enrolment centre of choice. If you do not have a printer, you can find this form at the centre and fill it there.
Important:
Pre-enrolment is only half of the whole process of getting the NIN. The second half involves you going to one of the NIMC Enrolment Centres to provide biometric data and have your picture taken. After that, you will receive your NIN. Now, let’s consider the whole procedure in detail.

- Go to the pre-enrolment portal (penrol.nimc.gov.ng).
- Create your account. Use your real name and surname, and provide a valid e-mail address. Fill in the rest of the fields and press Create.
- Once you have created an account, log in using your username and password.
- On the page that appears before you, press the large blue button that says Start Pre-Enrolment.
- In the Step 1, fill in your personal details. Title, first and last names, gender, date of birth, country of birth and nationality are the required fields. You can decide for yourself whether to fill the rest of the fields or not. Then click Save & proceed.
- In Step 2, provide additional personal details, such as height, marital status, level of education, employment and residence status and so on. Then continue with your application.
- Step 3 requires you to state your home address. You can even have your card delivered to the address you disclose. If you are homeless, choose Yes for the question ‘Are you homeless?’ and proceed to the next step.
- Next, fill in the information about your parents. Even though the note in this step says that you need to provide first and last names of your mother, father and guardian, you can only fill in the ones you actually know. For example, if you do not know your mother’s name, leave it blank. After you have finished, save and continue.
- In Step 5, fill in the information about your next of kin (their first and last names, your relationship with them and their address). This does not have to be your blood relative, just choose whomever you want, provide their information and continue with your application.
- Now, the next step will ask you for your and your parents’ origin data. If you were all born and raised in Nigeria, you should have no problems with this. Just fill it in and continue. However, we have encountered a bug that does not let you proceed if you choose a different country.
If you have the same problem, just choose Nigeria, some random state, LGA and city, fill the rest of your application, then go back to this step, and provide relevant information. It should work this way.
- In the next step, provide your document data. Choose the type of the document, fill in its expiration date and number and press the Add Document Data button. If you have any other documents, repeat the process as many times as there are documents and then continue to the next page.
- Step 8 is optional. It concerns disabilities, so if you do not have any (or if you do not want to disclose them) just skip it. If you do want to disclose them, then write your disability in the Disability Data field and press Add Disability Data. Repeat the process to add more disabilities to the list.
- The last step is the physical feature data. This is a rather loose term, as there are no specific requirements. It just says to describe your physical features. Write whatever you feel necessary and press Add Data. Repeat for any additional features you would like to add.
- Carefully go through your application and check the provided information. If everything is correct, go to Step 9 and press Generate Barcode.
If you have done everything correctly, you should receive a complex-looking QR code that has your data in it. Print it out or save it in PDF format, as you will need it to complete your application. NIMC recommends keeping this code away from prying eyes if you want to avoid your personal information getting into the wrong hands. You can find the barcode again on your personal pre-enrolment page.
This is where the pre-enrolment process ends. To finalise your registration, arrive to the NIMC Enrolment Centre to have your picture taken, and your fingerprints, supporting documents and signature scanned. After that, you will receive a transaction slip and your own NIN on another slip, which will mark the end of your enrolment.
Now you know how to enrol (or rather pre-enrol) for your National Identification Number. We hope that this article has helped you. Have a nice day!
