NUT vows strike over Kaduna teachers saga

- The Kaduna state wing of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) said its members will proceed on an indefinite strike from November 23, to protest the sack of 21,000 teachers

- NUT explained that the decision to embark on the strike was taken after the union’s executive council meeting, with the support of the national body of the union

- It said that if the government failed to reverse its decision, the entire public secondary and primary schools in the state would be shut down

The Kaduna state chapter of the Nigerian Union of Teachers has issued Governor Nasir El-Rufai a two-week ultimatum to rescind his decision to sack over 21,000 teachers who were said to have failed the recent competency test conducted for primary school teachers or it will commence on an indefinite strike action.

Daily Trust reports that the notice served via a letter to the governor takes effect from Monday, November 6, to November 23.

According to Comrade Adamu Ango, the Assistant Secretary General of the union, who signed the letter, at the expiration of the ultimatum, the union would embark on an industrial action in compliance with the wishes of its members expressed at the meeting of the state executive council which was held on Monday, November 6.

NUT said: “It was agreed by all stakeholders in the educational sector that the pass mark for the competency test be pegged at 60percent while those who are unable to score up to 60percent be retrained.

''However, in a classical display of bad faith which started as a rumour, the Kaduna state government unilaterally and arbitrarily pegged the pass mark for the test at an unprecedented 75percent.’’

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had reported that the state teachers threatened to go on strike if the state government should sack any teacher for failing the recent competence test conducted in the state.
