- Passengers journeying from Enugu to Abuja were left distraught after being harassed by a police officer at a checkpoint in Enugu
- The officer seized a laptop from one of the passengers and had demanded for a receipt for the gadget, as a means of extorting money
- Upon protest from several of the passengers, the officer allegedly threatened to shoot them
A policeman has been caught trying to illegally extort money from travelers on an Enugu highway.
The development was made public in a mail exclusively sent to NAIJ.com by one of the passengers, Victor Essien.

According to Essien, the passengers had been journeying from Enugu to Abuja, when they were stopped at a police checkpoint after Obolloafor town, in Enugu state.
A policeman at the checkpoint then seized a laptop from one of the passengers and began demanding to see a receipt in a bid to extort money illegally.
The incident reportedly occurred at 1pm.
Essien stated: “The police officer shown in the attached video began to search everything in the bus including our wallets and handbags (without a search warrant or any explanations for such invasion of our privacies).
“Having found nothing on anyone, it became clearer that he was looking for a foothold to illegally extort money from innocent commuters.
“The hoodlum in national uniform demanded for the receipt of a passenger's laptop (which of course is not a routine requirement for laptop use anywhere in the world) and seized the laptop when it was not produced.
“When we protested, this officer threatened to shoot all of us if we disobeyed his orders. He went ahead to keep us at that spot for hours because we were not forthcoming with his demands.
“Do police officers carry the receipt of the gun they use for their duties? On what basis are we to carry receipt of laptops everywhere we go?
“What is the justification of a wallet search of travelers? What have we done to the Nigerian police to deserve these continuous bouts of humiliation at gunpoint?”
The angry passenger called on IGP Ibrahim Idris, and the Nigerian government, to look into the matter.

In a related development, NAIJ.com previously reported that a Lagos-based legal practitioner identified as Sunday Elimihe, went partially blind, after being assaulted by some police officers attached to the Onipanu division in the state.
The 42-year-old lawyer was rushed to the Shomolu General Hospital after the alleged assault. Elimihe stated that he was beaten to stupor by the police officers for refusing to give them N1,000 bribe; adding that the policemen however stole the N150,000 he kept in his car’s pigeon hole.
