President Buhari suspends top aide’s investigative panel, gags him

- Obono-Obla is now barred from doing anything either by himself or through the panel until it is cleared by the Presidency

President Muhammadu Buhari has suspended activities of the Special Investigation Panel on Recovery of Public Property headed by his aide Okoi Obono-Obla.

Premium Times reports that the president also placed a gag order on Obono-Obla, who is his special assistant on prosecution in a memo by attorney-general Abubakar Malami dated November 1.

The memo, with reference number: HAGF/SH/2017/VOL/1/60, said Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had observed that the activities of the panel were not in line with what it was set up to do.

The online news platform reported that the directive to shut Obla down followed controversial statements that were credited to him.

The memo says that Obono-Obla is now “required to henceforth seek clearance from the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice before granting any media interview or making press releases on official matters."

Obono-Obla was also ordered to “promptly provide a detailed up-to-date report on the activities of the Panel to the undersigned for onward transmission to the Vice President.”

He was asked to cease further activities and await instruction from the presidency on the future of the panel.

Meanwhile, the Presidency has also attacked reports that President Buhari's appointments are in favour of the northern part of the country where he is from.

In series of tweets on its official Twitter handle on Sunday, November 5, the government accused a popular newspaper of reporting based on falsified facts.
