Manchester City and Tottenham also showed interest in Klopp over the course of his tenure at Borussia Dortmund, but it was only United that came close to securing his services.

Klopp gave the offer serious consideration, but found Woodward's pitch 'unsexy', he told friends.

Woodward told Klopp Old Trafford was 'like an adult version of Disneyland, a mythical place where the entertainment was world class and dreams came true'.

The executive vice chairman had flown out to see Klopp in Germany with David Moyes' ill-fated tenure in the United hotseat coming to an end.

United saw Klopp as the man to pick up the reins and return the Red Devils to their swashbuckling ways they had became renowned for under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Klopp was giving the offer serious consideration and met Dortmund chief Hans-Joachim Watzke on April 11 2014 to discuss his future.

"We first met in my kitchen," Watzke said. "It was an interesting talk. I think it made a difference because he said to me on the plane that we needed to talk again in the evening.

"I was due to have dinner with my daughter, who lived in Munich, so I could only see him at 10pm. He straightaway said: 'I can't deal with this pressure any more. I've turned them down'."

Klopp released a statement via the Guardian to confirm he wouldn't be leaving Dortmund for Old Trafford due to the incessant media speculation.

"Man United is a great club and I feel very familiar with their wonderful fans," it read. "But my commitment to Borussia Dortmund and the people is unbreakable."

NAIJ.com reported earlier that Manchester United have denied reports that Maurone Fellaini is on his way to Turkey to join Besiktas in the January transfer window.
