PDP chairmanship race: GEJ accused of using northern delegates to scuttle Secondus chances

- The race for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairmanship position is gathering momentum across the nation

- Alignments and re-alignments are the order of the day within Nigeria's main opposition party

- Some groups have resulted to blame games before the D-Day

A group known as the South-South Coalition for Good Governance has raised alarm over a move to scuttle the chance of Prince Uche Secondus emerging as national chairman of the Peoples Democratic (PDP) in the December 9 national convention of the party‎.

In a statement signed by its coordinator, John Boma-Harrison and sent to NAIJ.com, the group said the‎ grand plot is being hatched by former President Goodluck Jonathan, using some of his northern allies.

It also alleged that the former president is mobilizing northern delegates against the candidacy of Secondus, who they noted is a fellow southerner and a proud son of the Niger Delta.

‎While condemning the former president's action, they wondered why he would move against his own fellow Ijaw brother who they claim enjoys the overwhelming support of majority of PDP supporters across the country.

According to them, the popularity of Secondus and his rich profile in party politics has made him the favourite to emerge as the PDP national chairman in the forthcoming convention.

They advised the former president to desist from his actions and urged him to concentrate on playing the role of a statesman, rather than engage in subterfuge and unbridled politicking‎.

“We are disappointed in him but we want to use this medium to advise him to retrace his steps. He is a statesman so he should play that role,” part of the statement read.

Meanwhile, the national caretaker chairman of the PDP, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has disclosed that aspirants with pending cases in court will not be disqualified from contesting the national chairmanship position.

Markafi made the declaration while responding to questions from newsmen on Saturday, November 11 in Kaduna, when Otunba Gbenga Daniel alongside his campaign entourage paid him a courtesy visit.
