- The purpose of the visit is to review the military operations in the region

- The lawmakers said that the federal government had ensured adequate provision of funds, arms and ammunition to fight the insurgency

The House of Representatives’ Committee on Army on Thursday, January 11, began a two-day working visit to review the ongoing counter-insurgency operations by the Nigerian Army in the northeast.

Honourable Ossy Prestige, the leader of the team, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to Governor Kashim Shettima in Maiduguri.

Prestige said that the purpose of their visit is to assess the military’s performance in the anti-Boko Haram operations.

“It is our responsibility to check whether the funds appropriated by the National Assembly to the Army were properly utilised in the campaign against Boko Haram insurgency.

“Our aim is to get first-hand information on anti-terrorism war and to ensure that the state is free from terrorists,” he said.

The lawmaker stated that the federal government had ensured adequate provision of funds, arms and ammunition to fight the insurgency.

He also noted that the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, was very concerned toward ensuring that peace is restored in the region.

Shettima commended the committee for its support to the people of the northeast.

Meanwhile, another batch of the members of Reps' Army committee also on Thursday, January 11, visited the headquarters of the Division, Abakpa Military Cantonment Enugu.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by Colonel Sagir Musa, the deputy director of public relations, 82 Division.

Musa said that the honourable members were on oversight function to assess 2017 Nigerian Army capital projects in the Division's Area of Responsibility.

The lawmakers were conducted round major infrastructural projects including soldiers' living accommodation constructed or renovated by the Nigerian Army in Abakpa Cantonment Enugu.

NAIJ.com previously reported that a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Prince Tony Momoh on Wednesday, January 10, called for caution in treating the killings in parts of the country as herdsmen attacks.

Momoh, said criminals, including Boko Haram, might be hiding under herdsmen to unleash terror in some communities in the country.
