Stop disobeying court order; Release El-Zakzaky, wife - Falana tells federal government

- He said the federal government should release the couple

- He said that contrary to government’s claim, El-Zakzaky is sick and needs urgent medical attention

The popular human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), on Sunday, January 14, demanded the release of the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), also known as Shiite, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and wife, Zeinab.

El-Zakzaky and his wife were reportedly paraded before the media last week by Department of State Service (DSS) following their rumoured death.

The Punch reports that Falana, in a statement, described the continued detention of the couple against a court order and their parade before the media as illegal.

He advised the federal government to obey the ruling of the Federal High Court which ordered the release of the couple from the illegal custody of the DSS.

Recall that it was Falana who helped El-Zakzaky to obtain the Federal High Court’s judgment ordering his release from DSS detention.

The senior lawyer said that contrary to official claims that the detainee was hale and hearty, the Shiiite leader had since lost his left eye in detention and was suffering from a neck injury.

Falana said: “But contrary to the official claim that the Shiite leader is hale and hearty, he is currently wearing a neck collar support which was procured for him when he fell sometime last December.”

He also stated that the federal government ignored the recommendation of eye specialists that El-Zakzaky be flown abroad for better eye treatment.

Falana, therefore, urged the federal government to stop disrespecting court order and release the couple to their children who had applied to take them abroad for urgent medical treatment.

NAIJ.com previously reported that El-Zakzaky made his first public appearance in more than two years saying he is alive and well.

The leader of the Shiite group has been in custody of the DSS following his alleged confrontation of his group with the military.

There have been rumours about the state of El-Zakzaky with some saying he had passed away.

Channels however reported that the IMN leader confirmed that he is alive and thanked Nigerians and the federal government for allowing him access to his own doctors.
