Nollywood is growing bigger by the day not just in size but in global influence. This was seen in the success made by some of the latest Nollywood movies released in 2017. And one thing about a lot of Nigerian movies is the comic side of most of the dramas.

10 Days in Sun City

10 Days in Sun City is a Nigerian comedy/drama movie produced by popular Nigerian comedian Ayo Makun popularly known as AY. This movie comes after the success of his two previous movies “30 Days in Atlanta” and “A Trip to Jamaica”.

The movie tells another tale of another adventure of Akpos (played by AY himself) to South-Africa with his girlfriend, Bianca (played by Adesua Etomi). Akpos who hails from Delta and his girlfriend wants to get out of life in the hood. And believe they could achieve this if she (Bianca) can get into the Queen of Nigeria pageant and win it. After calling in a lot of favours, she got into the competition and eventually wins it. The win will take both of them to a luxurious destination in South Africa, Sun City where things will eventually turn south and chaotic. 10 Days in Sun City is full of action, drama, comedy, and romance.

Alakada Reloaded

Alakada Reloaded is the third production of the Alakada series by Toyin Aimakhu Abraham. It is the third sequel to the story of a village girl known as Yetunde Animashaun played by Toyin Aimakhu herself. Yetunde Animashaun is from a very poor background but whose desire is to rise above poverty and make it big in the city. She is a “wannabe” who tries to fake being rich and being raised abroad till she makes it.

Alakada reloaded was one of the highest grossing Nigerian movies of 2017. The movie was recorded to have made twenty-five million Naira in its first three days in the cinemas and a domestic gross of seventy million Naira in the box office. The movie cast a lot of Nollywood stars and Nigerian comedians which is why the movie has a lot of fans around the world.

Isoken

Isoken is a romantic comedy movie. It is the story of a lady nameD Isoken who is unmarried at 34. Everyone in her family is worried about her. She has what appears to be a perfect life any young lady would dream of: she is beautiful, successful, and she is surrounded by great family and friends. Her overbearing mother eventually matched her with a young successful man name Osaze at her youngest sister’s wedding. Osaze who is a handsome young man from a good family seems to be the perfect husband material for her. But thing will soon become complicated after Isoken met Kevin and falls in love with him. Kevin is not a Nigerian but a Caucasian (Oyinbo).

The movie Isoken explores the racial stereotypes in Nigeria, the cultural expectation and the bonds that unite families in a comedic, dramatic, and touching way.

Ojukokoro

Ojukokoro meaning "greed" is a crime-heist comedy movie. The movie is a tale of a cash-strapped young man who is the manager of a shady petrol station used as a front for drug dealers. He decided to rob his employers but along the line, he will soon discover that he is not alone in his ambition. And that a good reason is not always a right reason. This movie is one you should see.

Omugwo

Omugwo tells the comic tale of the experience of a couple, Raymond (played by Ken Erics) an Online Radio Personality and Omotunde (played by (Omowunmi Bada) a civil engineer who have just given birth. Coming from different cultural backgrounds, their mothers-in-law moved in with them against their will to perform Omugwo, the Igbo child care rite. But instead of making things easy for the new parents, the rivalry between the two mothers made life complicated for them.

The movie starred veteran Nollywood actresses Patience Ozokwor a.k.a “Mama G” as Raymond’s mother and Ayo Adesanya as Omotunde’s mother. The film was directed and produced by Kunle Afolayan.

The Royal Hibiscus Hotel

The Royal Hibiscus Hotel is a comedy that tells the story of a young lady Ope (played by Zainab Balogun), a struggling chef who works in London. After quitting her job, she decided to return to Nigeria and restore the fortunes of The Royal Hibiscus Hotel owned by her parents (played by Jide Kosoko and Rachel Oniga). But what she did not know is that her parents are planning to sell the hotel. She later found out that the man trying to buy the hotel is the man she is in love with. Watch this Nollywood romantic comedy to find out if it will end up in a disaster or it is one for true love.

The Wedding Party 2: Destination Dubai

Following the great reception and success of The Wedding Party in 2016, it was inevitable that a sequel was going to be made. The sequel themed Destination Dubai brings its fan up to date on the newly wedded couple who are now expecting a child. Is the reformed Dozie (Banky W) ready for fatherhood? Felix (Richard Mofe Damijo) and Obianuju (Iretiola Doyle) (Dozie’s parents) are still working on their marriage. But has Felix truly given up his mistress “Small Chops” for good? Tin-Tin (Sola Sobowale) (Dunni’s mum) is still going about with her hilarious antics and she is still being indulged by her husband Bam-Bam (Alibaba). Will anything happen between Nonso and Deardre, after their surprise kiss at the end of the Wedding Party 1? And also will the crazy best man Sola get close to Yemisi Dunni’s friend? All we know is that someone said yes but there is one problem, he didn’t propose.

Now there is another wedding and it’s happening in Dubai. The Wedding Party 2 was released on the 15th of December 2017 and it is currently the second highest grossing Nigeria movie. The movie made seventy-three million Naira in three days in the cinema. It has the biggest single opening for a Nollywood movie in the UK cinemas and was among the top ten movies in the UK on Boxing Day in 2017.
