Maina drags Magu to court, demands N10bn over alleged defamation of character

- The ex-pension boss seeks a court order mandating the EFCC and Magu to retract and publish an unreserved apology to him in at least three daily newspapers

- The attorney general of the federation and minister of justice Abubakar Malami states that he recently had a meeting with Abdulrasheed Maina

The former chairman of the presidential taskforce on pension reform, Abdulrasheed Maina, is demanding the sum of N10bn ‎in a defamation suit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and its acting chairman, Ibrahim Magu.

Daily Trust reports that in the suit which is in respect to a press interview Magu granted on November 30th and December 14th, 2017, Maina's counsel, James Onyilo, asked the court to declare the interview defamatory to with slanderous, untrue, injurious and intended to lower the reputation and integrity of the plaintiff in the estimation of right thinking members of the society.

Maina also sought an order mandating the defendants to retract and publish an unreserved apology to his person the in at least three daily newspapers within seven days from the day of the judgement.

Meanwhile, the attorney general of the federation and minister of justice Abubakar Malami said the controversial recall of Abdulrasheed Maina into the federal civil service won’t affect the reputation of President Muhammadu Buhari and his anti-corruption war.

Punch reports that Malami said he told President Buhari about his meeting with the wanted Maina, long before the news of Maina’s reinstatement was made public.

He, however, said he did not inform the President prior to the meeting.

In another report, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HoCSF) Winifred Oyo-Ita on Wednesday, January 31, in Calabar said the proposed civil service reform in the federal civil will save the country a whooping amount of between N60 to N120 billion in the next three years to come.

Daily Sun reports that Oyo-Ita made the remark in a presentation which she made at a retreat for project management Teams for the implementation of the 2017-2020 federal civil service strategy and implementation plan (FCSSIP) at the Tinapa Lake side hotel calabar capital of cross River tate.

The head of service explained that the transformation is expected to cost about N1.6 billion and could reach as high as N40 billion “given pay reform.
