Nigerian university develops herbal anti-diabetic, anti-cancer medicines

- Herbal anti-diabetic and anti-cancer drugs have been developed by the Federal University of Dutse, Jigawa

- Dr Salihu Ibrahim Isma'il of the department of biochemistry, developed the drugs

- The vice chancellor of the institution, Fatima Batul-Muktar, said the anti-diabetic drug has successfully passed a pre-clinical stage

Department of biochemistry, Federal Unversity Dutse, Jigawa, recorded a feat by developing herbal anti-diabetic and anti-cancer drugs, The Cable reports.

NAIJ.com gathered that Fatima Batul-Muktar, the vice-chancellor of the university, disclosed this in Dutse on Monday, February 26.

She said: “I am glad to inform you that one of our staff, Dr Salihu Ibrahim Isma’il of the Biochemistry Department has developed a herbal anti-diabetic and anti-cancer drugs."

According to the vice chancellor, the anti-diabetic drug has successfully passed a pre-clinical stage, adding that it has got ethical ethical approval for a clinical trial by Kano State Hospitals Management Board (KSHMB).

She stated that the clinical trial will soon commence at Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital (MAWSH), Kano.

She noted that research is one of the important works of a university, adding that the academic staff of the institution had successfully completed 16 research works in different filed since it was established in 2011. She also stated that 19 research works were ongoing.

Muktar who said that the students’ population has steadily increased from 202 to 5,963, also disclosed that fifty four students of the institution graduated with first class, adding that out of 427 graduating students, 223 made second class upper, 149 had second class lower, while only a student made third class.

She added: “At inception in 2011/2012 academic session with five academic departments and three faculties, the university has now increased its academic departments to 19 and five faculties."

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) said it successfully researched and developed six traditional herbal products for the treatment of Ebola, Malaria and other diseases.

Professor Karniyus Gamaniel, the NIPRD director-general, said this while presenting the score card of his eight-year tenure (2009 to 2017) in Abuja on Friday, January 19.

The programme, organised by NIPRD, aimed to present the products researched and developed by the institute and present staff service awards to deserving worker.
