- Lionel Messi's grandfather Antonio Cuccittini has passed away in Argentina

- He died at the age of 89 and he was the father to Lionel Messi's mother

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi is currently bereaved following the death of his grandfather Antonio Cuccittini who is said to have died last week Wednesday, February 21, in Argentina.

Antonio Cuccittini is Lionel Messi's mother's father and he died at age of 89 in Rosario where he had been living alone since death of his wife in 1998.

According to the report by Telam, Cuccittini suffered a breakdown in his home and when an ambulance arrived, he was diagnosed with a loss of consciousness and respiratory failure.

His late wife Celia who died in the year 1998 is said to be the grandmother Messi dedicated all of his goals to by pointing to the sky.

Both of them are said to have played an important role in the career of Lionel Messi while growing up.

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi played for Barcelona on Saturday, February 24, and helped his team to an emphatic win over Girona.

Earlier, NAIJ.com had reported how his brace and Luis Suarez's hat-trick inspired Barcelona to a 6-1 comeback victory against Girona on Saturday, February 24, at Camp Nou.

Coming off the back of a 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the Champions League round of 16 first leg clash, Barcelona were hoping to keep their season long unbeaten run alive when they hosted Girona in the Catalan derby. They ended up setting a new club record of 32 games unbeaten in the victory against Girona.
