The convener said as leaders of tomorrow, the youth need to start understanding how government works.

“The Public Senate is a platform aimed at educating and engaging the average Nigerian youth on advocacy issues. Our mandate is also to make the Nigerian youth understand the workings of parliament,” he said

“Over time the youth have come to believe that lawmakers, particularly the senators, only have sessions to debate fat salaries, cars or wardrobe allowances.

“But we know that this is not true. What we have started is to show the youth what the Senate is truly all about and to do this we’ve brought seven young people from all over Nigeria to observe senators debate issues in plenary amongst other activities.

“This will maybe inspire them to aim at being senators someday, but most importantly, it enlightens them on the true workings of the legislative arm of government,” he added.

During the course of the guided tour, The Public Senate representatives interacted with admin staff, a number of senators, support staff of the Senate President and the Senate President himself, who commended the initiative, while highlighting the importance of youth advocacy on legislative matters.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has said that the federal government is doing everything possible to reverse the unemployment rate in the country.

The minister made the comment when a delegation from Dudley College of Technology, United Kingdom in partnership with the Empowerment Support Initiative (ESI) paid him a courtesy visit at his residence in Abuja.

His words: “The government of Nigeria is doing everything possible to eradicate unemployment, we are creating jobs and engaging the youth at various levels of skills acquisition. We have improved on our railway transportation and you can imagine the number of youth that have been engaged in the project, same thing in other sectors.”
