Unidentified assassins murder NULGE chairman in broad daylight

- Unidentified assassins have murdered Mr Okaye Igali

The Bayelsa police command has confirmed the killing of Mr Okaye Igali, the Southern Ijaw branch Chairman of Nigerian Union of Local Government Employee (NULGE) by unidentified assassins.

DSP Asinim Butswat, the spokesman of the state police command, confirmed the murder to journalists on Saturday, February 10 in Yenagoa.

“Igali `m`age 53, was shot and killed by unknown gunmen, along Ayama Ijaw Road, Southern Ijaw LG on Friday.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the attack was a premeditated murder. The police tactical team have swung into action to arrest the culprits and investigation is ongoing,” Butswat said.

Mr Elaye Warifagha, the secretary, Community Development Committee (CDC) of Ayama-ijaw community told journalists that the attack happened in daylight.

His words: “The attack happened in broad daylight; it was a case of assassination by those who claim to know the deceased.

“The victim was on a tricycle going to Ayama-Ijaw water front to board a speed boat to his destination when the gunmen attacked him.” (NAN)

A report by the BBC indicates that more than 40,000 refugees have relocated to villages in Nigeria near the Nigerian-Cameroon border since last October.

The refugees are fleeing violence in the southern region of Cameroon following the consistent bloody crackdown by the Cameroonian army after separatists declared a breakaway state - "The Federal Republic of Ambazonia."
