- However, NIM’s deputy director general stated that while his group welcomed the development, it was still consulting on the choice of a presidential flagbearer
The meeting between former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s Coalition for Nigeria Movement and Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, among others, has led to increased speculation that the CNM is considering the former Kano governor as its candidate for the 2019 presidential election, Daily Trust reports.
The meeting was also attended by leaders of National Intervention Movement (NIM) and other political parties.

NAIJ.com gathers that the NIM’s deputy director general, Malam Naseer Kura, when contacted, stated that he was not surprised that Kwankwaso was invited to the meeting. However, he stated that consultations were still going on to decide on a political party and presidential flag bearer for 2019.
He stated: “As far as NIM is concerned, we are still consulting with political parties, stakeholders and gladiators on the way forward, particularly so because we have come to the conclusion that the solution to Nigeria’s problem lies in other forces outside the PDP and the APC.
“I’m sure, therefore, having Kwankwaso to be among those politicians in attendance at that meeting is not surprising to us. It is a welcome development as far as we are concerned.
“As elections draw closer, as the time table draws closer, I’m sure you would be seeing more and more people, who hitherto were either in PDP or in government, coming out to express their support for the coalition of new forces working towards replacing the present crop of political leaders.”

Recall that NAIJ.com previously reported that former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo met with Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso and other political bigwigs to forge a path to wrestling power from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2019.
The former president convened the meeting with 35 political parties in a hotel in Lagos under the umbrella of Coalition for New Nigeria.
Those at the meeting included co-chairmen of the Nigerian Intervention Movement, Mr. Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), Dr. Jhalil Tafawa-Balewa, one of the children of Nigeria’s post-independence first Prime Minister, Alhaji Tafawa Balewa, a former governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke; a former governor Osun state, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola; and a former special adviser to Obasanjo, Mr. Akin Osuntokun.
