- Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has said his wards are not scared of Lionel Messi
- Nigeria will face Messi and his Argentine's teammates on June 26 in Russia
- Eagles goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa also stated that he can stop Messi at the World Cup
Gernot Rohr who is the head coach of the Super Eagles and his goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa have stated clearly that the Eagles are not scared of Lionel Messi ahead of the 2018 World Cup.
Nigeria are in Group D for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia where they will face Argentina, Iceland and Croatia.
The Eagles will meet Lionel Messi and his Argentine teammates on June 26 in Saint Petersburg and Gernot Rohr has sent a message to the Barcelona superstar.
“We know Messi is one of the best players in the world, but we are not worried about anybody because we have a good team.
''The game against Argentina will be a tough one and it will be very interesting going into the group’s last games,
“Perhaps we don’t have players we had in the 1990s, when only one player could make the difference. But now, we have a young team playing good and quality football, not only one or two quality players who can make the difference.'' Gernot Rohr told The Punch.
Messi has been superb this season for Barcelona as the Catalans stay top on the Spanish La Liga standings and are still unbeaten this term.
Enyimba goalkeeper who is Super Eagles' current number 1 Ikechukwu Ezenwa also explained that he can stop Messi from scoring against Nigeria in Russia.
“Yes, I can stop Messi because we play as a team and always and collectively we have been doing well.
That’s the mentality we are taking to the World Cup. If I get chosen by the coach, I will do my best always to stop any player from scoring,” Ezenwa said.
Nigeria and Argentina have met at the World Cup four times with the more illustrious South Americans winning the four ties.
But the last time they met, Nigeria came back from a goal down to beat Argentina 4-2 in a friendly match played in Russia.
