A civil society organisation has said it will ensure that every eligible Nigerian exercise their right to vote in the forthcoming 2019 general elections.

The Voters' Union said it is important that no single eligible Nigerian voter is disenfranchised at the polls in 2019.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, May 23, the president of the Voters' Union, Olabisi Diana, said will become the voice of the people before, during and after the election.

Diana noted that the Voters' Union through its advocacy programs and platforms will ensure that eligible voters connect to achieve a common goal of developing Nigeria.

She said: "We envision a nation of well-informed passionate voters that are hard to be compromised in order to increase voters access to information, educate voters on voter's rights, duties and responsibilities, create voter awareness and increase voter participation.

Diana added that the union in collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) also intend, "to become a force for voters and civic education through a united voice stronger message."

"At Voters Union, we make democracy work for the people by building the bridge between voters and the voted.

This is necessary because in order to lead effectively, the people need political knowledge. If people know little or nothing about government, it becomes difficult to hold political leaders accountable or appreciate their good performance.

So we intend to form that bridge of communication that is currently lacking.

With Voters' Union, protecting constituency integrity, protecting our votes, and election follow ups becomes easy. This will check the right of citizens to participate in public affairs without intimidation or favor.

The widespread development of nonpartisan election monitoring around the world is a tangible evidence of citizens' desire for responsive, transparent, and democratic governance achievable through voters education," she said.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com earlier reported that the Citizens Center for Democratic Governance had questioned the success recorded by the Kaduna state government in its deployment of electronic voting for the state's local government elections.

CCDG said the Kaduna state government has started to give credence to their actions “via sponsored media outings to advice that Nigeria can adopt electronic voting for 2019 general elections.”

The group noted that several questions must be asked before agitating for a national replication of this seeming unsuccessful venture.
