Federal government takes steps to get back fresh $500m Abacha loot

- The federal government is working towards repartriating $500million looted during Abacha's regime

- The federal government has signed an agreement with USA, UK and Island of Jersey

The federal government of Nigeria has on Monday, June 18, signed an agreement with three countries for the repatriation of another $500 million looted during the regime of former head of state, late General Sani Abacha.

Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister for Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN) signed the MoU with the representatives of the governments of UK, USA and the Island of Jersey in London.

Daily Trust reports that the National Coordinator of the Open Government Partnership (OGP), Nigeria and Special Assistant to the President on Justice Reforms, Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu, who attended the meeting with the AGF said the latest agreement would enable the final draw down of the fund.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com earlier reported that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) rose from its weekly meeting in the State House Abuja on Wednesday, June 13, informing Nigerians of the forthcoming repatriation of $500 million loot from the United Kingdom, United States and France to Nigeria.

The money was part of the huge sums stolen by Nigeria's former dictator, Late General Sani Abacha, who died 20 years ago.

Making the disclosure while briefing journalists at the end of the meeting, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and minister of justice, Malam Abubakar Malami, said the move was the fallout of negotiations between the federal government and the three countries.
