President Muhammadu Buhari’s posthumous Grant Commander of the Federal Republic award to the late Chief MKO Abiola elicited criticism from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The PDP in a statement on Wednesday, June 6 described the president’s move as political.

The party wrote: The national honour proposed to be conferred on the acclaimed winner of June 12, 1993, Chief MKO Abiola, by the failed President Muhammadu @MBuhari, smacks of hypocrisy and political desperation ahead of 2019 presidential election.
Nigerians took to social media to criticise the party saying it had the opportunity to do so in 16 years but failed.
Some people asked the party not to handle it as a political move but congratulate the nation.

Meanwhile, the family of late Chief MKO Abiola commended President Muhammadu Buhari for granting a posthumous Grand Commander of the Federal Republic Award to their father.
The president announced the award on Wednesday, June 6 while also declaring June 1s as Democracy Day.
In a series of tweets, members of the Abiola family expressed their pleasure in the kove.
