Tension in Imo as civil servants are allegedly threatened, following instruction to stay away from Okorocha’s rally

- Civil servants in Imo state have been directed by labour leaders, not to be coerced into attending Okorocha’s ‘thank you rally’

- The labour leaders said the rally was not in the best interest of the workers, and did not have the blessings of the unions

- Some workers however reportedly disclosed that they had been getting threats on phone, allegedly from coordinators of the rally

Organized labour leaders from the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Imo have distanced themselves from Governor Rochas Okorocha’s proposed ‘thank you rally’ scheduled to take place on Thursday, June 21.

They have also directed workers not to be coerced into taking part in the rally, Vanguard reports.

NAIJ.com gathers that the union leaders passed their message to workers via fliers and personal contacts, on Wednesday, June 20.

In one of the fliers, workers were told to disregard “the falsehood”, spreading like wildfire, over the purported rally.

Civil servants were reminded that the rally was not in their best interest; as the union leaders also opined that “the programme, being organized by the Welfare Associations in the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), does not have the blessing of workers unions.”

Some workers who spoke on the condition of anonymity, however, reportedly disclosed that they had been getting threats on phone, allegedly from coordinators of the rally.

A staff of one of the ministries reportedly stated: “The threat is real, and any worker who fails to attend the rally is sure to face imminent sanction from government.”

Another worker reportedly said: “I have come to realize that the governor can cause misery to any worker who fails to dance to his tune. Going for the thank you rally is evil, and losing my job in this hard time is also evil.

“So, out of the two evils, I prefer the lesser evil of going for the rally.”
