Trump ends separation of migrant children from their parents by signing executive order to keep families together

After a lot of criticisms that trailed President Donald Trump's "zero tolerance" immigration policy that is separating migrant children from their families, the president has signed an executive order to put an end to the separation.

PBS reports that President Trump signed the executive order on Wednesday, June 20. The executive order will end the process of separating children from their families after they are detained for crossing US border illegally.

NAIJ.com gathers that before now, Trump had insisted that his administration had no choice but to separate families arrested at the US border because of federal law and a court decision.

However, Trump said the executive order would not put an end to the "zero tolerance" policy that prosecutes all adults apprehended crossing the border illegally.

He said: “We’re going to have strong, very strong borders, but we’re going to keep the families together."

Recall that NAIJ.com previously reported that Pope Francis criticised United States president, Donald Trump's "zero tolerance" immigration policy that is leading to the separation of migrant children from their parents at the US-Mexico border, describing it as immoral.

Pope Francis, who expressed his displeasure over the policy in an interview with Reuters, said that "populism is not the solution" to America’s immigration crisis.

Defending the policy, President Trump said it was necessary. He claimed that his political opponents wanted “illegal immigrants, no matter how bad they may be, to pour into and infest our country, like (the gang) MS-13”.
