The Atiku presidential campaign organisation says it finds it amusing that the presidency tagged the HSBC as corrupt, after the global giant bank predicted that a victory for President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 will have a negative effect on Nigeria's economy.

The presidency had in a statement by the senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, cautioned the bank against doomsday prophecy and accused it of aiding corruption in the country. The presidency also tasked HSBC to return Nigeria’s looted fund in its care.

The campaign organisation however, said, the defence by the presidency, exposes their hypocrisy and double standard.

A statement sent to journalists read: “It is with amusement that we read the statement by the Buhari administration condemning HSBC, the world’s largest bank, simply because HSBC gave a verdict that Buhari’s re-election would spell doom for Nigeria’s economy.

“It is at once comical and pathetic that the Buhari government’s statement called HSBC corrupt. It seems they are unaware that some of the record ₦12 trillion worth of debt which the Buhari administration has saddled Nigeria with is actually funded from HSBC, which is the world’s largest bank.

“When they were taking their money, the ever begging Buhari administration did not know that HSBC was corrupt. It was after the HSBC told the truth about the Buhari government that they knew that the HSBC is keeping looted funds.”

The pro-Atiku group noted that Nigeria under Buhari has been adjudged as the world headquarters for extreme poverty by the World Economic Forum and the World Poverty Clock as well as the British Prime Minister, Theresa May, querying if the are also corrupt.

“These are the things that the government should be focused on and not to haul infantile insults at the world’s largest bank,” the statement concluded.

Meanwhile, the PDP says with the emergence of President Muhammadu Buhari as its sole presidential candidate, “the All Progressives Congress (APC) is now irredeemably doomed for a crushing defeat in the 2019 general elections.”

This was contained in a statement sent to journalists by the party's national publicity secretary, Kola Ologbodiyan, on Thursday, September 13.

The party said: “President Buhari’s fear to contest an elective presidential primary, for which he and a few APC leaders scared away other presidential contestants within their party with threats and high nomination form fees, ended up ruining APC’s chance of fielding a good candidate for the election.”
