Flooding: NEMA inaugurates emergency operation centres

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has inaugurated its emergency operations centres across Nigeria

The director general of the agency, Mustapha Maihaja, said NEMA has inaugurated five different emergency centres to facilitate prompt search and rescue operations.

Maihaja said the new centres are also expected to provide humanitarian support in the 12 states that are mostly affected by flooding.

The five emergency centres with eight personnel are to cover Niger, Kwara, Kogi, Edo, Benue, Taraba, Adamawa, Anamabra, Delta, Rivers and Bayelsa states.

In a statement released on Sunday, September 16 and signed by Sani Datti, NEMA;'s spokesperson, Maihaja said the emergency centres would be responsible for planning, organising, directing and supervising the deployment of resources with the affected state governments, local authorities and communities.

Datti said that the primary objective of establishing the centres was to localise responses and expedite interventions to save lives and facilitate quick recovery.

The statement also said that the director general of NEMA and other chief executives would be responsible for formulating policies and operational guidelines for the conduct of emergency operations in all the affected states.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that NEMA and the National Hydrological Services Agencies (NHISA) have warned that 12 states across Nigeria would soon experience flooding due to torrential rain falls.

The two agencies gave the warning on Friday, September 7, during an emergency stakeholders’ meeting held with relevant stakeholders in Abuja.
