- Duterte had insulted Obama ahead of a meeting, as he warned that he would not be lectured by the then US president over concerns about a brutal war on crime

- Duterte, however, also defended his recent remarks in which he said there would be many rape cases in a Philippine city “if there were many beautiful women”

President Rodrigo Duterte of Phillipines has apologized to former US president Barack Obama, for calling the latter a “son of a whore”.

Duterte issued the apology in Israel on Sunday, September 2, after arriving the Middle Eastern country for a visit, Times of Israel reports.

NAIJ.com notes that the Philippines president had insulted the former US president in 2016 ahead of a planned meeting where he warned that he would not be lectured by Obama over concerns about a brutal war on crime that had then claimed more than 2,400 lives in the Philippines.

He said at the time: “You must be respectful. Do not just throw away questions and statements. Son of a whore, I will curse you in that forum.”

However, he said on Sunday: “I am sorry for uttering those words.”

Duterte, however, also defended his recent remarks in which he said there would be many rape cases in a Philippine city “if there were many beautiful women.”

He said he was joking, but added that he was exercising his right to free speech in a democracy.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that President Rodrigo Duterte apologized to God for calling Him "stupid," a remark that has caused an uproar among members of the Catholic Church and other religious groups.

Duterte made the apology during a meeting with Evangelist Eddie Villanueva at the Malago Golf Club in Malacañang, Philippines.
