Why we shut APC secretariat in Taraba - Police

- The Taraba state police command has disclosed the reason why it shut the APC secretariat in the state

- The state police commissioner said the move was to prevent further breakdown of law and order

- The APC in the state has been embroiled in intra-party crisis

The Taraba state police command on Tuesday, September 18, said they shut the secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state to prevent further breakdown of law and order.

The Punch reports that the commissioner of police in the state, David Akinremi, said that the command took the decision following last Friday’s violent clash between factional groups of the party in the state.

“You are aware of the violent clash between the supporters of El-Suldi who was sworn in Abuja as the state chairman of the party and the other faction who called themselves authentic exco of the party.

“El-Suldi, who was sworn in Abuja, came in last Friday, September 14 and attempted to take over the secretariat, and of course there was resistance from the other faction.

“Hoodlums then hijacked the situation and caused a breach of peace. So, to avoid a repeat of that, we have to seal the place,” he said.

Meanwhile, the El-Suldi-led faction of the party in the state has said the attack on Senator Yusuf Abubakar Yusuf, the senator representing Taraba Central, on Saturday, September 15 in Bali was the handiwork of some groups of persons in the state chapter of the party who had been planning to take their pound of flesh on Yusuf.

In a statement issued in Jalingo and signed by the public relations officer of the El-Suldi-led exco, Aaron Arthimas, the group alleged that some petitioners had written to the national secretariat, saying Yusuf could be lynched if he visited his constituency on account of his supposed unacceptability.

The statement, which condoled with the family of the deceased vigilante member who was killed in the incident in Bali, said the attack was premeditated to justify the insidious claim against the senator that he was not welcome in his constituency.

“We appeal to youths and supporters not to allow themselves to be used to fight other people’s wars against perceived enemies.

“The APC has enough internal mechanism to resolve internal contentious issues and abhors all forms of violence as a means of settling political scores,” the statement read.

But in a swift reaction, the state secretary of the Abdulmumini Vaki led exco, Rev. Stephen Othaniel denied the allegations, describing it as baseless.

He said: “We don’t harbour thugs, not to talk of sponsoring people to attack somebody. So, we don’t want to take issues with some aggrieved members of the party.”

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had previously reported that members of the political family of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu allegedly threatened to vote against his choice, should he back the Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for a second term in office.

The decision reportedly followed pressures being mounted on the national leader of the APC, Tinubu, from different quarters to back Ambode for second term.

A reliable source in the party said that Tinubu’s loyalists, who are mainly in Mandate Movement, held a meeting in Lagos on Sunday, September 16, and unanimously decided to challenge their leader if he backpedals to support Ambode.
