Just in! World heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua wins prestigious boxer of the year award

- IBF and WBA world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has been named the boxer of the year in Britan

- The British Boxing Board of Control honoured him for his his achievements for the 12 months from August 2016

- His trainer was named the trainer of the year while his fight with Wladimir Klitschko was also honoured

IBF and WBA world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has been named the Boxer of the Year by British Boxing Board of Control.

The British-Nigerian boxer was given the award by the board at a dinner held in London.

He was recognised for his achievements for the 12 months from August 2016, in which he successfully defended his IBF title against Eric Molina before winning the WBA belt against Wladimir Klitschko.

Tony Bellew, George Groves, Terry Flanagan, Lee Selby and Kal Yafai were also in contention.

Joshua's trainer Rob McCracken was named the trainer of the year after he oversaw the 27-year-old's victories, and who was also awarded the Dennie Mancini Trophy.

The Joshua-Klitschko fight in which Joshua stopped the Ukrainian in the 11th round at Wembley Stadium, was named Contest of the Year.

The award for Overseas Boxer of the Year went to America's Errol Spence, who in May defeated Kell Brook in 11 rounds to win the IBF welterweight title.
