Nigerian Senate goes into closed door session on resumption from two-months break

Members of the Nigerian Senate went into a closed-door session, which commenced at exactly 10:51 am after its resumption today, Tuesday, September 26.

The executive session commenced immediately after Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki took the official prayer and lead the chambers into the day's proceedings.

NAIJ.com gathered that the Senate resolved that the unity of Nigeria is not negotiable at the executive session.

The Senate also resolved to ensure that peace is restored in all parts of Nigeria, stressing that all groups seeking to achieve agitation should do so through constitutional means.

The Senate had promised to immediately prioritize issues like the flooding in several states and also focus on bills like the Jungle Justice Bill; Occupational Safety Bill and the Existing Vacancies Bill.

In a statement signed by the chairman of the Senate committee on media and public affairs, Senator Sabi Abdullahi, the Senate also promised to look into the passage of the three petroleum industry bills that are at committee stage.

Saraki had before the Senate's resumption, met with various blocs in the upper chamber to preach unity after the crisis witnessed in some parts of the southeast region as a result of activities of the Biafran agitators.

Meanwhile, Senate president, Dr Bukola Saraki on Monday, September 25, declared open a public hearing organized by the Senate committee on finance.

The public hearing is focused on:

- Tax Incentives Management and Transparency Bill (SB 331);

- Companies Income Tax Act 2004 (Amendment Bill) 2017 (SB 14); and the

- Bill for an Act to Provide for Constituency Projects in the Annual Budget of the Federation and For Other Matters Connected Therewith (SB321).

In his comments, Saraki emphasized the need for Nigeria’s tax regime to be characterized by transparency, accountability, and sound economic management.

He also expressed optimism that the private sector will contribute to the development of critical infrastructure across Nigeria, stressing that tax bills can be used to incentivize the private sector on the issue.
