After Buhari's directive, EFCC summons sacked NIA boss Ayo Oke, wife over $43 million Ikoyi money

- The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has invited the former DG of the National Intelligence Agency Ayo Oke

- Oke was invited by the commission for questioning alongside his wife Folashade

- The EFCC said it resumed its investigation following President Muhammadu Buhari's sack of the former NIA boss

The Economic and Financial Commission on Wednesday, November 1, announced it was inviting the recently sacked director general f the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ayo Oke for interrogation.

The commission in a statement by its spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren said the commission move to invite Oke for questioning is in furtherance to the EFCC's investigative activities to unravel the circumstances surrounding the $43.45 million cash recovered in an Ikoyi Mansion.

Uwujaren said EFCC has invited Oke and his wife Folashade who had earlier refused to honour previous invitations by the commission.

He also said the EFCC resumed its investigation on the matter following President Muhammadu Buhari's decision to relieve Oke of his position as the head of the NIA.

Uwujaren said: “In furtherance of its investigative activities to unravel the circumstances surrounding the $43.45 million cash recovered by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Lagos sometime in April 2017, the Commission has invited former Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Ayodele Oke and his wife, Folashade Oke."

“Mrs. Oke had refused to honour previous invitations by the Commission which resumed its investigation into the matter, following the Federal Government’s decision to relieve Mr. Oke of his position as DG.

“Beside the couple, other suspects are equally being invited to determine their culpability or otherwise in the humongous cash, in foreign currencies and naira notes, stashed in a residential building at Osborne road Ikoyi, Lagos,” Uwujaren added.

NAIJ.com earlier reported that President Buhari on Monday, October 30, sacked the director general of the NIA.

Oke was sacked alongside the secretary to the government of the federation.

The former NIA has been accused of stashing huge amount of cash to the tune of $43.45 million in an Osborne Towers Apartment in Ikoyi area of Lagos state.

The discovery of the money by the EFCC led to the establishment of an investigative panel led by the vice president, Yemi Osinbajo.

Also, the EFCC had earlier announced that the apartment in which the money was found was rented in the name of Oke's wife.

The commission further secured a court order for the forfeiture of the said money pending investigation and prosecution of the former NIA.
