Nestle to pay N35 million for contaminated Maggi noodles

- Indian authority has fined the Swiss food giant for contaminated Maggi noodles

- It said the ash content, which include heavy metals, found in the samples were above permissible limits for human consumption

- Nestle, however, said it would appeal the order

Swiss food giant, Nestle, has been fined $96,500 (about N35 million), after its Maggi noodles was found to be contaminated.

Sahara Reporters reports that the firm was fined 4.5 million rupees and its distributors 1.7 million rupees, arriving at the total sum of 6.2 million (96,500$).

NAIJ.com gathered that Nestle was fined by Uttar Pradesh state’s Shahjahanpur district after food inspectors found contamination in samples of Maggi noodles 2 years ago.

District food quality chief DP Singh said: “Food quality tests on Maggi samples found the product to be substandard.

“The ash content, which include heavy metals, found in the samples were above permissible limits for human consumption.”

Authority collected the samples during raids on various distributors in 2015.

However, a spokesman for Nestle India asserted that Maggi noodles were “100 per cent safe” for consumption, and that Nestle would appeal against the order.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had previously reported that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo declared smuggling a threat to Nigeria’s economy.
