Army commander who helped oust Mugabe gets sworn-in as Zimbabwe’s new VP

- Zimbabwe has sworn in as one of its two new vice presidents, General Constantino Chiwenga, a former Army commander who led the military takeover that ousted President Robert Mugabe from power

- Chiwenga took his oath of office at the presidential office in Harare, the Zimbabwean capital

- At his swearing-in ceremony, the ex-Army chief pledged to obey, uphold and defend the Zimbabwean constitution

According to Channels TV, Chiwenga, 61, was sworn in on Thursday, December 28.

NAIJ.com gathers that the former Army commander took his oath of office at the presidential office in Harare, the Zimbabwean capital.

He reportedly pledged to “obey, uphold and defend the constitution” of the country.

The military takeover brought an end to Mugabe’s 37-year rule.

NAIJ.com previously reported that there was serious excitement in Zimbabwe as Emmerson Mnangagwa, the sacked vice president under ousted Robert Mugabe, became the country’s new leader.

The sack of Mnangagwa had resulted in wide-spread anger in the country which caused a military take-over and the subsequent removal of Robert Mugabe after 37 years in power.

Throughout the period the military held the country down, Mnangagwa went into hiding.
