Super Eagles striker Henry Onyekuru has suffered a serious injury which rules him out of the season and potential out of the football spectacle the World Cup Russia 2018.

Initially, it was thought that the 20-year-old would be back in action sooner, but recent scan shows he could be out for half a year.

Anderlecht coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck does not think Henry Onyekuru would have sufficiently recovered before Nigeria play their first game at the 2018 World Cup against Croatia.

This is not the first time the Super Eagles will be having major injury casualties before a World Cup tournament.

In 2010, Chelsea’s John Obi Mikel was registered for the World Cup by the Nigerian Federation but was eventually replaced by Brown Ideye after the midfielder aggravated a knee injury while training with the national team.

Left-back Elderson Echiejile was ruled out of the 2014 World Cup with a muscle injury sustained in the Super Eagles last friendly against Greece and was replaced by Ejike Uzoenyi.

Onyekuru who was on the Super Eagles team that played in the final group B World Cup qualifier against Algeria and a friendly against Argentina in Russia damaged his medial ligament during Anderlecht’s 1-0 win over his former club Eupen on December 22.
