Trump proposes death penalty for New York terrorist

Following a terrorist attack on the city of New York, President Trump has said in a tweet on Tuesday, November 2, that the alleged terrorist, Sayfullo Saipov, should get death penalty.

New York post reported that Trump suggested death penalty in a tweet that also claimed Saipov was “happy” about killing eight people by driving a truck down a Manhattan bike path.

NAIJ.com gathered that Trump tweeted thus: “NYC terrorist was happy as he asked to hang ISIS flag in his hospital room. He killed 8 people, badly injured 12,” Trump tweeted.

However, some people are concerned that the president's suggestion of death sentence before the trial could affect the judgement of the federal trial.

Andrew C. McCarthy, a former assistant US attorney for the Southern District of New York, tweeted:

“Mr. President, we all know he should get the death penalty. But when you say it, it makes it harder for DOJ to make that happen.”

Trump had earlier criticized the criminal justice system for not acting fast enough.

He said: “We need quick justice and we need strong justice — much quicker and much stronger than we have right now — because what we have right now is a joke, and it’s a laughingstock,” Trump said at a cabinet meeting."

Meanwhile, White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders later clarified Trump's comments.

She said the president just expressed his "frustration" with the slow legal process and the need to make the legal process to move faster.

NAIJ.com previously reported that a 27-year-old Akayed Ullah attempted to bomb New York subway.

Ullah, wearing a homemade pipe bomb, set off the explosive in a New York subway blast on Monday, December 11, injuring five people and himself.

The man, who has been identified as Akayed Ullah, a Bangladeshi immigrant, according to the police, pledged allegiance to ISIS, a terrorist organisation and attempted the terror attack to avenge the deaths of Muslims around the world.
