Former FIFA World Best Footballer of the year, George Weah, has expressed confidence that he would win the presidential re-run election in Liberia, Premium Times reports.

This comes following the National Electoral Commission (NEC)'s decision to fix Thursday, December 28, for the commencement of announcement of the result.

Weah had previously taken time to thank his followers for their massive support in the re-run election.

The former AC Milan striker is reportedly set to beat his opponent, Vice President Joseph Boakai.

George Weah is expected to become Liberia's next president

Weah, 51, took to Twitter to thank all his supporters for their massive support, saying that he plans to liberate the country.

If he wins, the former AC Milan striker will become the 25th president of the country.

His opponent, 73-year-old Joseph Boakai who has been the country's vice president for the last 12 years, got only two counties to vote for him.

In 2014, Weah ran for election to the Senate as a Congress for Democratic Change candidate in Montserrado County.

He was overwhelmingly elected to the Liberian Senate on 20 December 2014. Weah defeated Robert Sirleaf, the son of President Sirleaf, becoming the first Liberian international athlete elected to represent a county in the Legislature.

He won a landslide victory, receiving 99,226 votes, which represented 78.0% of the total votes from the 141 polling centers, while Sirleaf, his closest rival received 13,692 votes, which is nearly 11% in the election marred only by a low turnout.
