Family is the most important thing in every child’s life. It should provide knowledge, love, safety, support, as well as other things necessary for proper development. If children do not get this from their families, they tend to go down the wrong road in life.

One of the reasons why kids might become involved in criminal activities is the inability of their parents to teach them the right things or to contain them. Sometimes parents are just not prepared to be parents. Other times, they might simply lack the time to spend with their child. In the worst-case scenario, parents themselves might be involved in criminal activities, making the kids inadvertently involved in them as well.

The situation might become even more harrowing, if the kid witnesses constant fights and squabbles between the parents or suffers from their strict parenting style. The harsher the parents are to each other and their kids, the more violent and problematic the children become.

This also coincides with the mental health of both the parents and the children. As the kids often mimic their parents, they might inhibit some of their mental issues along the way. For instance, children might adopt anxiety, depression and other mental illnesses that might force them to do wrong things.

If the family is struggling financially, this might also increase the children’s chances of getting involved in some bad things. Because the situation is unsatisfactory at home, they might want to try to improve their situation by using illegal means.

All that said, family problems are not the only things that can push children into becoming delinquents. Let’s consider other causes.

Personal reasons of juvenile delinquency

In some cases, family has nothing at all to do with the criminal behaviour of the child. Juvenile delinquents can come from the nicest, happiest families that can provide them with anything they want. So why do they get involved in unlawful things?

Well, one of the possible reasons is the issue with socialisation. Some kids often find themselves incapable of interacting with other people in acceptable ways. This might have social anxiety or simply be rude. When they cannot communicate with others properly, they tend to become angry and irrational, which pushes them to do stupid things.

We have mentioned how the mental health of parents affects children’s behaviour, but the kids’ mental stability also plays an important role. Sometimes, kids might not even be aware of their action and their consequences because of their mental illness. In many developed countries, mental illnesses are the leading cause of juvenile delinquency.

We cannot talk about mental health and not mention physical health. Kids that look different from other children or those that have visible physical impairments oftentimes suffer from bullying. While many victims of bullying deal with it in a civilised manner, some might use it as fuel for their aggression.

Another reason why kids become delinquents is substance abuse. While it is a crime in itself in most countries, it can also push the children to commit crimes. Various substances, especially addictive ones, change the chemistry of the brain and distort reality, which can lead to unlawful activities. Moreover, when such substances run out, juveniles might commit crimes just to get more.

Peer and societal pressure as causes of juvenile delinquency

Friends play a major role in forming a child’s personality. So when these friends go down the wrong path, they tend to take their buddies along with them.

While some simply provide a bad example, others might actually pressure their friends to commit crimes. Influential kids might even threaten to cease communication or humiliate their more vulnerable peers if they refuse to do what they are told.

Depending on what the child chooses, they can either be ostracised by their peer group or become a part of a gang/clique. Both of these scenarios can turn them into delinquents. In the first case, the feeling of rejection and not fitting in can push them to the life of crime. In the second case, they can become criminals as a part of a group.

Apart from the peers, society as a whole can pressure the kids into becoming criminals. One of examples that comes to mind is when kids watch movies or play videogames that are not for children and then try to recreate them in real life.

Another example is when society labels someone as a delinquent, and this becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy. A child that is viewed as a criminal only because of their background or even appearance has a high chance of not only looking the part, but also playing it.

Last, but not least, society treats one-time juvenile delinquents very poorly. Many people think that once a criminal — always a criminal, so they do not give those who have simply slipped up another chance. This leaves the troubled kids no choice but to continue with their wicked ways.
