A former commissioner of police, Fulani Kwajafa, has said societal corruption and politicians have facilitated the degeneration of the police Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) which he said was set up during the Buhari/Idiagbon military era.

The former police boss made the statement in an interview with the Nation newspaper published on Sunday, December 17.

Kwajafa who has been credited with starting SARS also headed the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

He said SARs was created in the wake of the January 1983 coup that brought in General Muhammadu Buhari as head of state to battle robbery which had become extremely rampant especially in Lagos which was Nigeria’s capital at the time.

The former police boss attributed the current state of SARs to the corruption in the society.

He said: "Sometimes we blame policemen, but we should ask ourselves and ask our government, whether enough is being done or provided to ensure an efficient and effective police force by global standards. When we established SARS, nobody was corrupt! When they give you information money N5,000, it is sufficient for one week."

Meanwhile, four people parading themselves as operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (F-SARS) have been killed in Rivers state.

NAIJ.com gathered that the alleged fake SARS officers were killed by F-SARS on Saturday, December 16, at Ogbogoro community in the Obio/Akpor local government area of Rivers state.

A source who pleaded anonymity said the suspects were spotted to be fake SARS operatives by some residents of the area. The unidentified residents alerted Ozuoba Police Station.
