Surprise, as state govt discovers 33 ‘foreigners’ among Libya returnees; makes immediate plan to send them back home

- The Yobe state government has discovered 33 citizens of the Republic of Niger, among the 216 returnees from Libya

- The foreigners were discovered following security checks just as the returnees were being dispatched to their LGA’s

- The state government has disclosed that it would ensure that the foreigners are taken back to their country

33 citizens of the Republic of Niger have been discovered by the Yobe state government to be among the 216 returnees from Libya which were received on Saturday, January 20, Channels reports.

The development was made public by Ahmed Mustapha, the state’s commissioner for justice.

NAIJ.com gathers that Mustapha disclosed that the foreigners were discovered following security checks, as the returnees were being dispatched to their various local government areas.

He stated: “After security checks, we discovered that 33 were from the Niger Republic and we are handing them over to the Nigeria Immigration Service who will also ensure they are taken back to their country.”

Speaking on the development, Adamu Abdulfatai, the state’s controller of immigration, stated that due process would be followed in handing the foreigners over to immigration officials in Niger Republic.

In his words: “We will be professional in linking up with the authorities of Niger Republic to ensure that they reunite with their families.”

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that the Ogun state government, at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Abeokuta, received 64 returnees from Libya, who were indigenes of the state.

The commissioner for environment, Bolaji Oyeleye, said the move was facilitated with the assistance of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

He said: “We were contacted by NEMA to come and take responsibility for our people. This we responded to swiftly. We thereafter created a means through which these returnees could contact their relatives so that they can go home and reunite with the rest of their families."
