The new year started on a sad note for traders in Marian market, Calabar, the capital of Cross River state.
An early morning fire destroyed many shops in the popular Calabar Municipal market, leaving many traders in tears.
According to Channels TV, the raging fire started in the early hours of the New Year, today, Monday, January 1.

Eyewitnesses on ground blamed the inferno on high voltage and said the fire service were contacted, but they complained about lacking the tools to help put out the fire.
Full details about the impact of the fire have yet to be ascertained and officials haven’t confirmed the cause.
Traders say goods and property worth millions of naira were lost to the tragedy.
Some victims were seen trying to salvage part of their goods before the fire gets to their shops, while others were not so lucky to recover anything.
The Marian market is always a beehive of activities before the latest incident
The incident is coming a day after a high-tension cable electrocut*d one person and destroyed many houses at No. 17 Umo Orok Lane in the Calabar-South axis of the metropolis.
An eyewitness, Uche Kalu, said the fire was caused by high voltage which quickly spread, affecting no fewer than six houses and in the process killing a middle-aged businessman simply identified as Joseph.
