The Nigerian army announced in the morning of Friday, February 9, through statement by its spokesperson, Brig Gen SK Usman, in Maiduguri, that Mallam Yusuf Buratai, the father of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai, is dead.
The statement said the elderly Buratai passed away in a hospital in Maiduguri, Borno state.
The terse statement read: "Good morning all, Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihirrajiun. This is to inform you of the passing away of the father of the Chief of Army Staff, Alhaji Yusuf Buratai this morning in Maiduguri."
Daily Trust reports that the late Yusuf Buratai had been hospitalized for days, but did not state the nature of his illness.
The source simply said the late Yusuf had a successful surgery at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UTMH) but died later.
The late Yusuf, a former military officer, is said to be survived by 14 children, including the chief of army staff as well as many grandchildren.
