Buhari’s reinstatement of NHIS executive secretary won’t stop EFCC probe - Lai Mohammed

- Lai Mohammed said the reinstatement of the NHIS boss, Usman Yusuf, would not stop EFCC from investigating him

- The minister of information said he was not aware if there was any investigation by the EFCC

- Yusuf was reinstated by President Buhari, despite being suspended by the minister of Health, Isaac Adewole, in June 2017, following allegations of gross misconduct

Minister of information, Lai Mohammed, has said that the reported reinstatement of Usman Yusuf, executive secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), will not affect any probe by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

There was report on Tuesday, February 7, that President Muhammadu Buhari had reinstated Yusuf despite being culpable in the discharge of his responsibilities.

Isaac Adewole who is the minister of health had set up a committee to probe Yusuf for alleged misconduct and suspended him although the latter said only the president has the power to do so.

The Cable reports that the minister of information said Yusuf’s reinstatement would not stop any probe if he was under investigation by the EFCC.

He said: “I am not aware that the EFCC is investigating the recently reinstated executive secretary of NHIS but if that is the case I don’t think his reinstatement is a bar to any investigation.

When asked why he said he was not aware that the NHIS ES is under investigation, he said, “I didn’t say I’m not aware of his investigation. I was precise I said I am not aware that the EFCC is investigating him and that if it is true, that the fact that he has been reinstated does not mean a stop to it. That is what I said.

“I am not saying I’m not aware that he was suspended or any investigation is going on. The fact that he has been reinstated does not mean that the EFCC will not continue with its investigation, that is what I said."

NAIJ.com had reported that the letter of reinstatement was sent to Adewole on Tuesday evening.

It was reported that Adewole confirmed receipt of the reinstatement letter but didn’t elaborate on when Yusuf would resume or under which terms.

“It is true that the president has reinstated him,” Adewole said.

It was reported that the reinstatement letter urged Yusuf to work closely with the minister upon resumption.
