Drama as police arraign 2 men for stealing senator’s chickens in Osun

- The Ousn state police have arraigned two men for allegedly stealing six chickens belonging to a former senator

- The accused individuals allegedly stole the livestock from the senator’s farm; but both men pled not guilty to the charges

- The chief magistrate eventually granted both men bail in the sum of N20,000 and adjourned the case till March 1

Two men, Adegoke Atanda (65) and Obe Adegbola (50) have been arraigned before an Osun Chief Magistrate’s Court, for allegedly stealing six chickens belonging to Senator Olu Alabi, Punch reports.

Senator Alabi represented the Osun central constituency at the upper legislative chamber between 1991 and 1992; and was also a former chairman of the Federal Capital Territory Development Authority (FCDA).

NAIJ.com gathers that the chickens, said to be worth N9,600, were reportedly stolen from the senator’s farms in the Oke Onitea area of Osogbo, the state capital, around 10pm on February 10, 2018.

The prosecutor, Gafari Muslimi, informed the chief magistrate, Fatimoh Sodamade, that the offence contravened sections 516 and 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap. 34 Vol. II Laws of Osun State 2003.

However, the accused persons elected for a summary trial, as they pleaded not guilty to the charges; and their counsel, Okobe Najite, applied for bail on their behalf.

Najite asked the court to grant his clients bail in “the most liberal and affordable terms.”

The accused were subsequently granted bail to the tune of N20,000 each plus one surety in like sum.

The chief magistrate adjourned the case till March 1 for further hearing.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that three suspects were apprehended after they attempted to steal two goats from a goat shed in the Amarata area of Yenegoa, Bayelsa state.

The suspects who claimed they were coming from a night vigil, could not explain how they came to be in possession of two goats belonging to a restaurant owner.

According to eyewitnesses, one of the suspects had a bible in his hand and insisted they were returning from a church service, at the odd hour they were caught.
