Excercise Ayem Akpatuma: Soldiers kill 10 herdsmen in Adamawa, recover AK 47

- Armed herdsmen reportedly attacked a village in Benue state

- The herdsmen were said to have set the village ablaze but were resisted by the troops

- The troops engaged them and killed 10 of them

Troops of 101 special forces battalion on Excercise Ayem Akpatuma (Cat Race) deployed at Numan local government area of Adamawa state swiftly responded to a distress call and supported troops at Gwamba village under attack by herdsmen on Tuesday, February 27.

According to a statement sent to NAIJ.com by the director, army public relations, Brigadier-General Texas Chukwu, despite the swift reaction to rescue the village from destruction, the notorious herdsmen set the village ablaze before the troops arrived.

However, the troops were said to have trailed the herdsmen and arrested 6 of them at Garigiji village while trying to escape.

“During the process of the arrest the herdsmen show resistance, which made the alerted troops to engage them and killed 10 of them,” the statement said.

Items recovered from the herdsmen are: one AK 47 rifle, 41 rounds of 7.62mm special, one locally made rifle with 25 cartridges, one cutlass, looted clothes and one motorcycle.

NAIJ.com had reported that the attackers stormed two villages in a community in the early hours of Tuesday, February 27, and opened fire.

Several houses were set ablaze, while the residents fled in different directions, even as details of the casualties are yet to be ascertained.

Eyewitnesses however confirmed that military personnel have been drafted to the area to contain the attack.
